a little bit of everything and a whole lot of film

Interview | Jacqueline Clarke Mitchell

I actually have my insomnia to thank for introducing me to Jacqueline. My 3am Instagram perusals have led me to her profile and as soon as I saw her page, I knew I had to interview her.

Her photos remind me of Sofia Coppola movies (specifically The Virgin Suicides and Marie Antoinette) - equal parts soft, lush femininity and subtle sultriness with the tiniest hint of grit. The images she creates are an amalgamation of all things delightful from the 70s and the 80s (eras we film lovers adore with fierce passion) - the flowers, the celebration of the female form (sexy without being sexual), the rainbow colours, the all consuming need to run away to the sea or the mountains and the edgy, beautiful but cynical vibe that permeates her black and whites - this woman speaks my language!

May she also inspire you as she has inspired me.

1. Place of birth.
Jacqueline: Sydney, but I grew up in Newcastle, Australia.

2. Where has been the most inspiring place you have travelled to and what has made it so inspiring for you?
Jacqueline: It's a close tie between Halong Bay, Vietnam and Granada, Spain! Halong Bay for its unbelievable scenery and Granada for its rich culture, siestas and flamenco dancing!

3. Top 5 things on your bucket list.
Jacqueline: I actually don't have a bucket list! But I guess at the moment it's a road trip around America very soon.

4. What is your greatest extravagance?
Jacqueline: Definitely my Canon 24-70mm 2.8 lens and eating out at restaurants way, waayy more than I should.

5. What made you delve into film photography and how long have you been shooting with film?
Jacqueline: Joe Nigel Coleman got me into shooting film. You guys should check him out if you haven't already! I've been shooting film since 2012.

6. Favourite film stock?
Jacqueline: Portra 400. I love the golden skin tones and the vivid jades it brings out in the ocean. Yum.

7. Why film though?
Jacqueline: The tactility, the soul, the process, the grains and tones!

8. YouTube or Instagram?
Jacqueline: Hmmm, I love both for different reasons. Instagram for discovering amazing artists and YouTube for lessons in 'how to life'.

9. Colour or B&W?
Jacqueline: Love my HP5 but I have to say, colour!

10. Introvert or extrovert?
Jacqueline: Introverted extrovert. I know this because I read the book, 'Quiet' by Susan Cain. Interesting read!

11. Early bird or night owl?
Jacqueline: Night owl.

12. Name 3 songs that would sum up your 2017.
Jacqueline: Woah this is hard! But I think it is: Khurangbin - Two Fish and An Elephant, The War on Drugs - Strangest Thing and Lucy Pearl - Don't Mess with my Man.

13. Name 3 books that you can read over and over again (or 3 films you can watch over and over again).
Jacqueline: I think everyone says this, but Pulp Fiction definitely. O, Brother Where art Thou and probably the first Lion King.

14. What was one insecurity you had about yourself and what did you do to overcome it?
Jacqueline: Acne. What a stubborn MF. I think turning 26 was how I overcame it haha. If only I could get back all the money I spent on treatments and products back!

15. Describe yourself in one word.
Jacqueline: Smiley.

16. What makes you happy?
Jacqueline: People I love, a swim in the ocean, dancing, a glass of wine or 3 after a long day, getting my film back and my plants.

17. Name 3 inspirations.
Jacqueline: My mum, the 70s and my long time favourite, Jeff Buckley.
