a little bit of everything and a whole lot of film

A performance by Alex Box

Last Tuesday I was fortunate enough to have been invited to a performance by Illamasqua's Creative Director, painter and world reknowned makeup artist, Alex Box at Cuadro gallery in Dubai International Financial Centre or as the locals call it, DIFC.

I must admit, this was my first time to attend a beauty event as a "beauty blogger" ( I use the term loosely) and I was a bit nervous, not to mention I was attending alone. Major nerves.

Upon arriving, I was promptly ushered inside with a mimosa in hand and found myself walking into a perfumed wonderland of makeup and flashing lights. Cuadro was quite small and guess who I bumped into…

I ran into the ever so gorgeous Laura of Buy Now Blog Later! Fangirl moment aside, I have followed Laura since her Lollipop26 days on YouTube as she was the first blogger I had discovered who also lived in Dubai. As she had put it that night, "It was bound to happen (that we meet)" as we sipped on cocktails and chatted about, what else, makeup! She is even more beautiful in person plus she is a total sweetheart and I am so happy to now call her a friend.

And so we settled in to watch Alex work her magic.

Art became life in her hands.

I called it Dia de los Muertos slash Greek Goddess. What do you think?

She then spoke about her inspirations and what made her transition from being a painter and sculptor into a makeup artist.

She is, to say the least, unconventional in her makeup artistry,  but as we get lost amongst all the bazillions of how to's, the beauty manuals and makeup tutorials telling us what and what not to do we tend to forget that makeup artistry IS in fact an ART. And with art, everything goes. Lest we forget, Alex's work commands top billing in the international fashion scene  so she is on to something here and Illamasqua knows just that and has tapped her to be their Creative Director since its inception in 2008.

Thank you Alex Box, for reminding us that makeup IS art. And thank you for being an inspiration not only to me, but to many.

I now leave you a photo of three different skin tones modeling Illasmasqua's Vampette lipstick which would be absolutely perfect for Fall.
