a little bit of everything and a whole lot of film

Barkers Deli, Warwick

Having a hangover is bad enough in itself but having one that completely immobilises you for an entire day, one beautifully sunny day in Warwick might I add, is pure torture. Especially if it also happens on the one day you had entirely to yourself to go out and explore. This happened to me not so long ago, as I was staying in Warwick for a couple of days. After spending an excruciating day in bed, I awoke at about 4pm feeling loads better and ravenously hungry. Since I was staying at a hotel (review here!) right by the market square, I decided to have a look around to see if there were any good places to eat.

It was unusually quiet for the market square at 4.30 pm and there were pubs here and there but after poking my head in a couple of them, I decided I could not bear to be in the same vicinity as alcohol at that moment. Other restaurants were full and as I was about to amble back home to the hotel, defeated and order from room service, I came upon this.

Food, retro vintage exterior, tea and coffee? Right up my alley!

I fell in love.

They had everything!

Wine, a vast selection of gourmet cheeses, freshly baked bread of every type imaginable, pate, caviar, chocolates, wine ( I, of course, passed on that), oat cakes, cookies, crisps, pickles, cured meats, pies, porridge, soups, nuts, oils, vinegars, canned Italian tuna and salmon, even fresh produce! But the thing that got me going the most was that they carried Fentiman's Rose Lemonade. If you have not tried it yet, you must. If beauty had a taste, this would be it.

Seeing that I was giddy with excitement taking photos of everything and at the same time probably looking like I was about to keel over, the owners Tim and a lovely lady whose name, I must admit, escapes me at the moment, very so kindly prepared me a takeaway feast fit for a king.

A thick slab of Gouda cheese, sea salt crisps,  buttered brown bread with poppy seeds, a delightful little salad of mesclun and cherry tomaoes, a little bit of pickled everything (olives, chilis and onions) and a slice of the most scrumptious pork pie I have ever tasted in my life, not to forget, a bottle of Fentiman's Rose Lemonade to wash it all down.

One of the best meals ever in my life.

I didn't know pork pie and pickled onions went so wonderfully well together.

Needless to say I also bought chocolates and little bites to take back home to Dubai.

If you ever find yourself in Warwick or are lucky enough to live close by, definitely check out Barkers Deli and try their delicious pork pie. Don't forget to tell them I sent you! :)

I can't wait to go back.
